# Waste management and Energy effeciency

According to the World Bank, the African continent generates more than 190 million tons of waste per year, and this figure is expected to increase by 70% by 2025. Also, less than 10% of this waste is collected and treated in an ecological manner, which leads to great risks for the environment, hence the importance of working on waste management (industrial and other). In terms of energy efficiency, according to the IEA (International Energy Agency), many African industrial facilities operate well below their optimal energy efficiency levels, resulting in energy losses and significant costs. Also, according to the African Development Bank, Africa could save up to $5 billion per year by improving energy efficiency.

Task:

Develop an innovative solution to improve waste management and/or energy efficiency in an African context. The solution must be creative, feasible and sustainable, while taking into account economic and social constraints.

 

The recovery of raw materials and materials from waste, which can reduce the demand for new raw materials and reduce the amount of waste in landfills.

The efficient use of energy by minimizing energy losses, and the recovery of waste energy.

Energy efficiency can be improved by using energy sources, such as solar, wind, hydroelectric or geothermal energy for power generation.

Waste management that can be improved through the circular economy, which consists of reducing, reusing, recycling and recovering materials rather than throwing them away.

Effective waste management that can reduce emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.
